Utah QB Cam Rising is not expected to return to the Utah Utes in 2025

Seventh-year quarterback Cam Rising is “not expected” to return as Utah’s starting quarterback in 2025, according to a report from 247Sports.

It is unclear whether Rising will elect to enter the NCAA transfer portal for an eighth season of eligibility or whether he will test himself in the 2025 NFL Draft.

After leading the Utes to the 2021 and 2022 Pac-12 titles, Rising has appeared in just three games since tearing his ACL at the end of Utah’s Rose Bowl loss to Penn State two years ago.

He started in 2024, but suffered an injury to his right hand in his second appearance after being pushed into Baylor’s Gatorade cooler midway through the first half on September 7.

Rising missed three straight games before returning to the lineup against Arizona State. In that contest, the seventh-year quarterback suffered a season-ending ankle injury. He finished that game 16 of 37 in the pocket with 209 passing yards and three interceptions in a game in which the Utes suffered a 27-19 loss to Arizona State.

Rising would finish his career as one of the most productive quarterbacks in program history, completing 63.1% of his passes for 6, 127 yards, 57 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

He played in 30 career games and started 28 for Utah. Rising ranks fourth all-time in program history in career passing and total (65) touchdowns. 2022 and 2021 were some of his best seasons at the helm, where he earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors in 2021 and was the MVP of the 2022 Pac-12 Championship win over USC.

Rising was last seen on the sidelines at Rice-Eccles Stadium a few weeks ago during Utah’s senior loss to Iowa State. There he put on a hiking boot and a bandage around two fingers of his throwing hand.

A formal decision on his future will likely be made before the transfer portal closes on December 28th.
