Early predictions for a better season

The 2025 SEC college football schedule has been released, of course a whole bunch of SEC fans are grumpy about something, every team has been hosed, it’s all wrong and…

Mississippi State is in for a much, much better 2025 season. And why?

1) It can’t be worse. No, Mississippi State won’t be 2-10 again, it won’t be uglier because…

2) While there are already 22 players in the transfer portal, just wait and see. The players are coming in, the offense is becoming more stable and yes, the lines are getting better – again, I don’t want to put it simply, but they cannot and will not be worse. And ….

3) The schedule.

Before the start of the 2023 season, it seemed like a relatively safe bet that the Bulldogs would beat Toledo – 41-17 Rockets.

No one had any idea who this Cam Skattebo guy was, and Arizona State had had a difficult season – in hindsight, losing 30-23 on the road to the eventual College Football Playoff No. 4 seed wasn’t so bad.

And I know no one wants to hear it now, and 2-10 will never be okay, but aside from the faceplant against Toledo, the loss against Florida, at Texas, at Georgia, Texas A&M, Arkansas, at Tenenssee, Missouri and at… Ole Miss is not The terrible.

Okay, yes, but all ten losses were to bowl teams, three of them to teams in the top five of the College Football Playoff and one to No. 9, and Ole Miss was knocking on the door.

So what is the schedule for 2025 and why should it be any better?

It’s December, we’re still over eight months away from traveling to Hattiesburg, so let’s have some fun and dream big.

Sure, why not? Mississippi State starts 4-0. Jackson Arnold – we’re taking a positive approach here, folks, and no, I have as little insight into this as you do – will look great in the opener against Southern Miss.

Arizona State won’t have the same magic in 2025 and won’t be able to handle MSU’s passing game in a state of shock to start the season, and Alcorn State and Northern Illinois will pick up wins. Boom. Big turnaround, the Bulldogs are a big story, and then…

Yes, the SEC season is a bear. I’m going to temper it a bit with a string of losses to start the SEC campaign, but just when it looks like all hope is lost, Mississippi State is going to do something special with a mega takeaway game at Arkansas Put your legs up.

No, the momentum won’t last against Georgia or Missouri, but… Mississippi State wins a fierce back-and-forth battle for bowl eligibility, the program is on a positive upswing and…

OK, good. It’s going to take a huge bounce back to go from that 2-10 disaster to six wins, but there’s plenty of time, plenty of pieces in the portal to get in and out of the entire SEC world, and yes, Mississippi State should somehow being able to achieve almost six wins in the second season under Jeff Lebby.
