Man City are in turmoil and Pep Guardiola is struggling to find a solution, says Jamie Carragher | Football News

Manchester City are in a massive crisis and Pep Guardiola has no answers, he says Sky Sports Expert Jamie Carragher.

City suffered their seventh defeat in 10 games with a 2-0 defeat at Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday evening and are in danger of failing to qualify for the knockout rounds.

That is as many defeats as the Premier League champions have suffered – four years in a row – in the last 105 games under Guardiola, who is on an unprecedented run of success so soon after signing a two-year contract extension.

Lee Hendrie says Ruben Amorim should take over Juventus’ tactics against City in the Manchester derby on Sunday

When asked what Guardiola must be thinking after the defeat in Turin, he replied Sky Sports the expert continued CBS: “‘Why did I sign this contract?’ That’s what he thinks.

“You can’t believe what you see. This is a huge crisis. That was a crisis two or three weeks ago. The greatest manager and most successful manager of all time, and he doesn’t have the answers right now.” He doesn’t.

“He tried different things, different systems, maybe players in different positions, and a great manager like him really struggles and finds it difficult.”

“He’s never been through this before, so he has no experience with this situation. He has nothing to fall back on and can really look back on because he’s been so successful in the past. This is a real eye opener.”

“Probably many coaches around the world look at Pep with a wry smile. They’re not enjoying what he’s going through, they’re just thinking, ‘Finally Pep Guardiola is going through something we’ve all been through at some point in our lives.’ Career’.”

Jamie Carragher says Man City are in a massive crisis

  • Man City have lost seven games in all competitions and have won just one of their last ten games
  • That’s as many defeats as in the previous 105 games
  • Since the beginning of November, he has conceded 21 goals in nine games – more than any other club in Europe’s top five leagues
  • Guardiola has failed to win three consecutive group/league games in the Champions League for the first time in his career
  • City have now gone eight away games without conceding a goal – the longest game of Guardiola’s career

Pep questions himself after another defeat

Pep Guardiola believes his Man City side are still the best despite their terrible form

Guardiola admitted he has doubts about himself after Manchester City’s recent defeat.

“Of course I question myself, but I am stable in good and bad moments. I’m trying to find a way to play well,” he said.

“Our game will save us. We can do it. We conceded very few chances compared to the game at Nottingham Forest, which we won. We’re setting the right pace.”

“We missed the last pass, didn’t get into the six-yard box (at the right time) and didn’t have the composure at the right moment.”

“But I love my team. That’s life, it happens. Sometimes you have a bad time, but I’ll persist until we get there.”

City now face an important game against Paris Saint-Germain, who are also in danger of failing to qualify, before a home game against Club Brugge next month.

Guardiola accepts that his only goal now is to finish in the top 24 of the Champions League table.

He said, “That’s the goal. We need a point or three. We’re going to Paris to try and the last game at home.”

Gündogan and Pep disagree about City problems

Veteran midfielder Ilkay Gundogan said after the game against Juventus that he felt City were suffering from a loss of confidence, but Guardiola dismissed his player’s comments.

“I don’t agree with Ilkay,” he said. “Of course it’s tough, but apart from one or two games during that time we’ve played well.”

City now face another test of their resolve when they host rivals Manchester United in a derby on Sunday.

Gündogan said TNT Sports: “It (confidence) is a big part of it. This is also a mental problem.”

“You see that sometimes we miss the ball or lose a duel, and then we see that we immediately slack off and lose our rhythm. They (the opponents) don’t even have to do much, but it has such a big impact on us, right?” Now they are able to break our rhythm with the smallest thing.

“Even more, you have to do the simple things as well as possible and create a smooth process, then you have to work hard again. That’s how you get your confidence back – do the little and simple things, (but) always do the wrong things at crucial moments in the moment.”
