Trump was named the 2024 Person of the Year after winning the presidency and surviving assassination attempts

President-elect Donald Trump was named Time’s Person of the Year on Thursday, recognizing his stunning political comeback and a historic year in which he weathered assassination attempts and felony convictions.

“For orchestrating a comeback of historic proportions, for driving a once-in-a-lifetime political realignment, for reshaping the American presidency and transforming America’s role in the world, Donald Trump is Time Magazine’s 2024 Person of the Year.” , wrote the magazine.

It was widely expected that time would favor Trump; The magazine has recognized the winner of that year’s presidential election in every race since George W. Bush in 2000. Trump was also named Person of the Year in 2016 when he won the White House for the first time. To mark the occasion, he will ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday morning.

“Since he began running for president in 2015, perhaps no single person has played a greater role in changing the course of politics and history than Trump,” Time wrote. “Trump is back at the center of the world and in a stronger position than ever before.”

Trump became only the second U.S. president to win non-consecutive terms, joining Grover Cleveland, after defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in November. After comfortably securing the Republican nomination, Trump expected a rematch with President Biden, but Biden was forced to drop out under intense pressure from Democrats after a disastrous debate in June.

Harris quickly took his place at the top of the Democratic candidates in July and fought a bitter campaign until the end. In a race that pollsters consistently described as one of the closest ever, Trump won a decisive victory in the Electoral College, sweeping all seven major battleground states.

To make the victory even sweeter for him, he also won the popular vote, leaving Democrats dazed and facing a daunting 2025 in which Republicans will control the White House and both chambers of Congress. Trump made significant gains in blue states and was also able to prevail among Latino and black voters.

But on July 13 of this year, the 45th and future 47th president was inches away from death. A suspected assassin shot at Trump as he held a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, wounding his ear and hitting three other people, one fatally. A bullet hit Trump’s ear, and as Secret Service tried to clear the bleeding candidate from the stage, he held his fist in the air and shouted “Fight!” as cheering fans responded.

The image of Trump with his face covered in blood quickly became one of the most memorable political photos in American history. That same week, he accepted the Republican nomination and paid tribute to Corey Comperatore, a firefighter killed by the gunman at the Butler rally.

Another assassination attempt in Florida, in which no shots were fired at Trump after agents spotted a man with an AK-47 near his golf course, was foiled in September.

“Many people have told me that God spared my life for a reason, and that reason was to save our country and restore America to greatness,” Trump said in his victory speech. “And now we will complete this mission together.”

Trump in May also became the first former president ever convicted of a crime. He was convicted in New York of 34 counts of falsifying business documents in connection with the concealment of a hush money payment to Stormy Daniels. His sentencing has since been repeatedly delayed and Trump has sought to dismiss the case.

Other criminal cases against him in Georgia and at the federal level have either been dismissed or remain pending while he returns to the White House.

Now, amid his transition and the political battles over his Cabinet picks, Trump is returning to the White House as perhaps the most transformative American political figure of the century, redrawing the political map and shattering Washington norms.

After a first term marked by fierce political battles, investigations and unrest, the question is how he will govern and whether he can keep his promises to fight inflation, curb illegal immigration, the permanent “deep state” in Washington and bring peace to the unrest in the world remains to be seen.
