Warnings, advisories and expiry times tell today’s weather story

A good way to determine when Old Man Winter calms down in your location is to look at when the various winter warnings expire.

For southeast Lower Michigan, counties from Ann Arbor to the Detroit area, the winter weather advisory expires at 10 a.m. this morning. This should tell you that snow accumulation is over in southeast Michigan. Of course it is very cold, so the roads can remain icy.

Looking across the western side of Lower Michigan, we see a strip of purple-shaded counties from the extreme southwest of Lower through Kent County and north into a portion of north-central Lower Michigan. All of these winter weather advisories expire tonight at 7 p.m. This signals to you that snowy and treacherous road conditions will continue into the early evening hours today.

Of course it will be very cold tonight, falling into the single digits. Even though the winter weather warning is over this evening, roads remain icy and snow-covered. Kent County is expected to see another 2 to 4 inches of snow, most southwest of Grand Rapids and significantly less northeast of Grand Rapids. The northern Lower Michigan Winter Weather Advisory Area will still see areas with an additional three to six inches of snow.

Pink winter storm warnings are in effect for coastal counties from Allegan north to the western Grand Traverse region until 7 p.m. tonight. Another 5 to 10 cm of snow is expected in this area.

Across the heart of the heaviest snow belt from Kalkaska north to Gaylord, Charlevoix, Petoskey and eastern UP, the winter storm warning is in effect until 7 a.m. Friday. This suggests that heavy snow will continue into tonight. This northern part of Michigan will see another 4 to 8 inches of snow fall.

Even in the deep snow belts it will stop snowing on Friday morning. Winds on Friday will be light, but temperatures will remain very cold in the teens. In areas with heavy snowfall, roads may experience snowy and icy sections.

If you want a safer time to travel, expect to reach the freezing mark late Saturday afternoon, even in areas with heavy snowfall. Sunday will be even safer as temperatures rise to 40 degrees across Michigan.
