Dec. 12 (UPI) — Timothy Weah curled a cross to Weston McKennie, who buried a shot and helped the duo become the first Americans to score a Champions League goal together as he led Juventus past Manchester City.

The historic goal came in the 75th minute of Wednesday’s 2-0 win at the Allianz Stadium in Turin, Italy. You came into the game as a midfielder in the 69th minute.

“In the situation we’re in, it was definitely a big moment for the team,” McKennie said on the CBS Sports broadcast. “We talked about it. We just wanted to come out here and do our best.”

“We knew it would be a difficult game.”

McKennie carried the ball across midfield and fired a pass to the right, hitting the ball over the defenders and leading Weah into the box.

Weah took a few touches of the ball and was able to fend off an initial pass. He then spotted McKennie making a run at the far post and directing a high pass to his U.S. men’s national team teammate.

Then McKennie slowed down and waited for the feed. He finished the move with a scissor kick into the left side of the net, beating Sky Blues goalkeeper Ederson.

Kenan Yildiz set up Dusan Vlahovic for Juventus’ first goal in the 53rd minute.

Juventus is now 4-1-2 and sits in 14th place after six games in the league phase of the Champions League. The Sky Blues (2-2-2) are in 22nd place. In the new Champions League format, the eight best teams in the eight league phase games automatically qualify for the round of 16.

Teams finishing 9th to 24th will compete in a two-game knockout round playoff, while teams finishing 25th or worse will be eliminated.

“We defended well without giving up space and struck at crucial moments,” Juventus coach Thiago Motta told reporters. “It was a great performance from everyone, including those who came on as substitutes later in the game, they did their part when asked.”

“McKennie, for example, had a great game: he has a unique mix of physical and technical qualities that allows him to be dangerous in the final third. We are lucky to have players like that. That was a great evening, but everyone’s game is different.

Juventus hosts Venezia in Turin on Saturday in an Italian Serie A game. They will face Club Grugge in another Champions League game on January 21 in Bruges, Belgium.

The Sky Blues host rivals Manchester United in a Premier League game on Sunday in Manchester, England. They will face Paris Saint-Germain in another Champions League game on January 22nd in Paris.
