86 accidents reported in the last 24 hours due to slippery roads

METRO DETROIT – Michigan State Police said the slick roads led to dozens of accidents Wednesday evening and into Thursday morning.

According to MSP, there were 86 reported crashes in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties in the past 24 hours.

Two MSP patrol cars were also hit.

“Slow down! The weather doesn’t cause accidents, drivers do! Snowplows: Salt trucks are in use and do an excellent job! Remember, when stopping at an intersection, you must stay 200 feet behind a snowplow and stop 20 feet behind it.” “Your paint and the snowplow drivers will thank you,” MSP wrote.

Here’s a look at the roads (highways and back roads) from our Ryan Marshall during a live drive early Thursday morning.

“To be honest, if you didn’t have to go out, I wouldn’t go out right now because it’s very slippery underneath,” Redford resident Tim Lanning said. “If you look down, it’s all ice down here. And the further we go, the colder it gets. So, what else do you need to know? I mean, that’s all. Just slow down. Be careful here.”

“I’ve been doing this off and on for about 20 years,” said Jim Osborne of Livonia when it comes to plowing roads. “I mean, you get used to it. You get used to it. I mean, it’s Michigan. What do you expect to know? It could be 70 degrees tomorrow.”

Ice is starting to pile up on the side streets of metro Detroit, particularly in Southfield. The drivers we spoke to were surprised by the road conditions.

“People have told me about it, but you never know what to expect. Will it snow a little? It could snow a lot, you just have to wake up and see,” Arriell Waters said.

One man we spoke to actually ran in these conditions.

“Just placing your foot and just being aware. I’ve had years of practice at it, so I’m kind of used to it now.” said Jahrt Hill.

“It’s pretty bad out here,” said Aden Russell of Carlton. “Very slippery conditions.” I would definitely drive carefully if you’re going to work. But we’re out here salting and making things happen.”

“The roads are slippery. Whiteouts. “I was going about 10 miles an hour up 12 Mile,” said Detroiter Steve Bush. “Drive slowly and try to pay attention. Don’t drive too fast. Keep your eyes on the road.”

“It was hard. It was slippery. I just didn’t expect it to be like this. I got a text message early in the morning that said, “Be careful on your way to work,” said Leo Holland. “I saw some loose and fast riders and some slips.”
