Michigan woke up to a cold, snowy morning with heavy lake snow across northern and western regions – and for many Michigan residents, it may not be over yet.

A winter storm warning remains in effect for portions of northern Michigan, western Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, according to the National Weather Service. In the Upper Peninsula, heavy lake effect snow reached over 14 inches in some areas, while western Michigan saw up to 6 inches of snowfall.

According to the NWS, less snow fell in central Michigan, southeast Michigan and the Thumb, up to 4 inches, but combined with cold temperatures and strong winds, it made for dangerous road conditions.

How much snow did Detroit get?

According to the weather service, total snowfall in the Detroit metropolitan area will vary between 1 and 4 inches.

A National Weather Service observer in Eastpointe reported 4 inches in 12 hours through Thursday morning.

What’s the weekend forecast for Detroit?

Detroit will experience subfreezing temperatures through Friday, with temperatures warming to highs in the upper 30s on Saturday and highs in the mid-40s on Sunday, the weather service in White Lake said.

Expect clear conditions on Friday and Saturday, followed by a wet end to the weekend. According to the NWS, rain is expected Saturday evening and Sunday.

How much snow was there in northern Michigan?

The NWS in Gaylord reports snowfall totals in northern Michigan between 6 and 8 inches.

An observer near Elmira reported 17 inches last day. An observer in Mancelona reported 16.5 inches since Wednesday. Boyne City had a 14-inch report.

What’s the weekend forecast for Northern Michigan?

It will be cold and snowy for northern Michigan through Thursday, with the winter storm warning in effect until 7 a.m. Friday. Highs are expected to be around 15 degrees Thursday, falling to a low of about 5 degrees overnight, with negative wind chill expected, the weather service in Gaylord said. Continued heavy snowfall is expected.

“Lake effect snow will continue today through Friday. An additional 8 to 12 inches of snow is possible through Friday morning, with the possibility of more than 18 inches. “High snowfall combined with gusty winds will result in hazardous travel and at times whiteout situations,” the NWS said Thursday.

Highs will be in the low 20s C on Friday, with the possibility of snow showers falling to lows below 10 C overnight. It will warm to the low 30s on Saturday, with a clear morning followed by a slight chance of snow showers, the NWS said. Rain or snow is expected overnight Saturday, followed by a wet Sunday with showers likely.

How much snow was there in West Michigan?

Snow totals in western Michigan ranged from 1 to more than 7 inches, the weather agency in Grand Rapids reported. Wellston reported 11.8 inches and Fruitport had 6, observers reported.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for West Michigan through 7 p.m. Thursday, with temperatures below freezing, continued snowfall overnight and possible negative wind chill, the weather service in Grand Rapids said.

“Snow showers and cold temperatures will continue to create poor travel conditions today. Wind-chilled temperatures will be as low as 10 degrees below zero this morning, so dress warmly,” the weather service said.

Friday is expected to be clear, with highs in the low 20s falling to around 15 overnight. According to the NWS, it will warm up to 30°C on Saturday, initially mostly cloudy, with a chance of rain in the afternoon. The rain will continue overnight into Sunday.

Snowfall totals in the Lansing area are varying between 1.5 and 2.5 inches, according to the NWS.

On Thursday, there is a chance of snow showers lasting overnight before disappearing Friday, the NWS in Grand Rapids said. Highs on Thursday will be in the upper teens, falling to around 11 overnight. On Friday, highs will be in the low 20s overnight, falling to the mid teens overnight.

The weather service said temperatures will warm up to 30 degrees Celsius on Saturday, with initially mostly cloudy conditions followed by a slight chance of rain or snow in the afternoon. Rain is expected overnight into Sunday.

According to the weather service, snow totals in the Upper Peninsula will range from 1.4 to 14.6 inches. An observer at Twin Lakes south of Houghton recorded 14.6 inches. A Munising observer recorded 12.2 inches.

The weather service in Marquette said the Upper Peninsula experienced heavy lake-effect snowfall Thursday, with accumulations of more than a foot in some areas. Scattered snow showers could continue overnight, with highs in the mid teens falling to around 3 overnight.

“There will be heavy lake effect snow with snow depths of up to a few meters and dangerous driving conditions. Outside of the lake effect, it will feel colder with strong winds and could impact travel for high-profile vehicles,” the weather service said Thursday morning.

Expect highs around 20°C and clear skies on Friday. Saturday will warm to temperatures in the low 30s, initially partly sunny, followed by a chance of snow showers, according to the NWS. A wintry mix and freezing rain may occur overnight. Sunday will be in the upper 30s and clear.

According to the NWS, snow totals in southwest Michigan at Plainwell range from 2.2 to 5.2 inches.

What’s the weekend forecast for Southwest Michigan?

A winter weather advisory is in effect for parts of southwest Michigan until 7 p.m. Thursday, with snow showers and highs in the upper teens expected in Grand Rapids overnight, falling to the low teens overnight, according to the weather service.

Expect clear skies Friday with highs in the mid-20s, according to the NWS. On Saturday it will warm up to over 30 degrees, initially mostly cloudy, followed by a chance of rain. Rain is expected to continue overnight and into Sunday.

How much snow did Port Huron and Thumb get?

According to the NWS, snow totals in Port Huron and the Thumb region are about 1.3 inches.

What’s the weekend forecast for Port Huron and the Thumb?

In the Port Huron area, highs Thursday will be in the low 20s with a chance of snow falling to a low of 11 degrees in White Lake and becoming partly cloudy overnight, according to the weather service. Expect highs in the mid 20s on Friday.

Temperatures will warm to around 30 degrees on Saturday, with a chance of rain or snow overnight, according to the NWS. Rain is expected to continue into Sunday and maximum temperatures will continue to warm to below 40°C.
