Selena Gomez’s marquise engagement ring has great value

Selena Gomez may have showed off her engagement manicure at the Chanel Academy Women’s Luncheon on December 11, but she saved the engagement ring itself for a stunning Instagram debut hours later. The singer revealed that she and producer Benny Blanco are busy with a close-up shot of her new jewelry set against a pale pink backdrop. Not that she needed to zoom in, because the diamond is objectively huge.

Than that Emilia Perez As the star shared the news with family and friends in her favorite Banana Republic jeans and a fur coat, viewers quickly learned the ring’s touching backstory. Gomez is wearing a marquise-cut diamond, a style that accounts for only 5 percent of all diamonds sold today, according to Ann Grimmett, VP of merchandising at Jared Jewelers. This form originated in France in the 18th century, when King Louis XV. had a diamond made in the shape of the lips of his lover, the Marquise de Pompadour. Its rarity has made marquise diamonds the first choice for celebrity engagement rings centuries later, from Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s first appearance to David Beckham and Posh Spice. More importantly, the cut is just “rare” enough to earn praise in Gomez’s 2015 song “Good for You.”

In the track, Selena Gomez describes herself as a “marquise diamond that could make Tiffany jealous.” It is also called “14-karat” quality in the opening verse. Although Benny Blanco didn’t produce the song, he must have listened to it a few times before purchasing the ring nearly a decade later.

The jeweler behind Gomez’s ring hasn’t fully confirmed its value yet. Diamond experts had a good enough view to judge it from a distance. “Given the large center in an eternity setting, we estimate this to be approximately 6 carats and valued at approximately $225,000,” Grimmet of Jared said in a press release. Meanwhile, jewelry expert Laura Taylor of Lorel Diamonds gave the rating even higher in an interview with the magazine Daily Mailat a staggering price of $1 million.

While marquise diamonds aren’t nearly as common as oval or cushion cut diamonds, Selena Gomez’s engagement ring is sure to spark a new trend for brides-to-be. They’re regal but not flashy – meaning they’ll suit any bridal aesthetic. “Traditionally associated with royalty, marquise diamonds have elegant, pointed ends that create the illusion of a larger stone,” said Jillian Sassone of Marrow Fine Jewelry. “They’re also incredibly versatile – whether in a north-south or east-west shape, marquise diamonds look stunning in both prong and bezel settings.”
