Gadsden County and Cocoa battle for Florida 2A title: Live updates

The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) high school football state championship series ranges from The Villages in mid-central Florida to 305 in Dade County.

A matchup many may not have expected will begin when Gadsden County (13-1) takes on Cocoa (10-3) for the Class 2A state championship.

High School On SI will provide live updates throughout the afternoon as the Tigers and Jaguars face off at Pitbull Stadium in Miami.

The Class 2A state championship is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time

Gadsden County wins the coin toss and elects the coin toss.

Third play from scrimmage and a big play, Cocoa’s Duran Guilford with an interception and the Tigers start deep in Gadsden territory.

Cocoa tries and converts 4th-and-1 from the 11, with a QB dive from Brady Hart.

Brady Hart rolls right and finds superstar receiver and FSU signee Jayvan Boggs in the back of the end zone for a great 11-yard TD pass and catch. Cocoa takes a 7-0 lead at the 8:18 mark of the first quarter.

Jeremiah Thomas brings Gadsden the ball into Cocoa territory with a long kickoff return to start the next drive.

Gadsden converted 4th and 1 with a short run from Kemarrion Battles to maintain possession.

Kemarrion Battles runs into the end zone for a touchdown on 4th-and-inches from the 11, while Gadsden makes it 7-7 with 3:33 left in the quarter.

Jayvan Boggs brings it over the Gadsden 6-yard line with a 54-yard reception.

On the next play, Latrison Lane runs a 6-yard touchdown, making Cocoa 14-7 with 1:04 left in the quarter.

At the end of the 1st quarter, Cocoa leads 14-7

There are already three big 4th down conversions in the game, with Cocoa stuffing one on a TFL from Javion Hilson.

Bad snap on a punt way over the head of Cocoa punter Marcus Trout and the ball bounces all the way to the end zone where Trout can only throw it out of bounds, resulting in a safety. Gadsden came within inches of making the score 14-9 with 8:37 left in the quarter.

Gadsden’s Kelvin Crawford was down for a long time with 27 seconds left and was finally able to use his strength to get up and run. Go straight to the locker room.

Marcus Trout missed a 24-yard field goal attempt and dragged it wide of the left net. Cocoa had a first down against the Gadsden 7, but the Jaguars defense held firm.

At halftime, Cocoa leads 14-9.

Kelvin Crawford, who left the game with a stinger late in the second quarter, was back for Gadsden to start the half and had a big sack on the first drive.

Kemarrion struggles for his second touchdown of the day, this time on a 3-yard run. After a penalty wiped out a 2-point attempt, the snap was bad for the extra point. Still, Gadsden takes the lead for the first time with 15:14 at 6:00 in the quarter.

Gadsden with a stand at the goal line after Cocoa had 1st and goal from 1st. Cocoa settled for a 21-yard field from Marcus Trout to regain the lead at 17-15 with 1:38 left in the quarter.

Gadsden fails to convert 4th-and-2 from their own 28 balls, and that’s how the third quarter ends. Cocoa holds on to a 17-15 lead and gets the ball back deep into Gadsden territory.

Latrison Lane takes a pitch and runs it in for a 3-yard touchdown, Cocoa capitalizes on the turnover on Gadsden downs to take a 24-15 lead with 10:31 to play.

Daylen Green hit hard on a 55-yard touchdown pass from Landon Dougherty, although Cocoa’s Tyion Jacobs blocked the PAT, Gadsden got within 24-21 with 9:01 left.

Brady Hart scores on a 1-yard QB keeper for what could be the game-winning touchdown, Cocoa leads 31-21 with 5:21 left.
