The Game Awards 2024 takes place tonight, Thursday, December 12, and the show’s tenth anniversary is reportedly set to host some big world premieres. But first, some more basic information about the show in case you want to watch for yourself.

As for the show itself, it’s actually the tenth anniversary of the awards ceremony, which may be the closest thing to the Oscars in the video game industry, although the Oscars were also about showing 20 trailers for new films at the same time. Geoff Keighley practically survived E3 and has now made the Game Awards the biggest multi-studio showcase of the year. There are always complaints about the show being more of a big commercial than a real awards show, but guys Are Watch out. The Game Awards continually break viewership records every year they air. In 2023, it had 1.7 million concurrent streams and 118 million total viewers. I expect 2024 to go beyond that.

The show will reportedly be bigger than usual. Trusted journalist Jason Schreier, who has a lot of inside information, said:

“There’s a good chance you’ll see one of two teaser trailers for games that won’t be released until 2026 or later… “There are at least two things that will make you say, “Holy shit, me.” Me can’t believe it’s here.’”

That could mean anything. I heard that Gabe Newell from Valve is at the show and when Valve announces something it’s a big deal. I won’t even say it. I’m not even going to say Half-Life 3 is coming out. …But maybe.

There could be a whole series of big announcements. 2024 was originally supposed to be a “light” year for gaming, but that wasn’t the case as it was thought that 2025 was likely to be bigger. Everyone is waiting for something, anything about GTA 6, which is supposedly coming in fall 2025, but who knows how likely that is. However, Rockstar usually does its own thing instead of relying on other shows, so I don’t expect to see it here.
