Winter weather advisory is in effect for Metro Detroit through Thursday morning

We’re starting with snow over much of the region this morning as we’ve watched these lake effect snow bands form overnight Wednesday and into the early hours of Thursday.

Bands of snow will descend south along and south of M-59 into the I-94, I-96 and I-696 area during the mid to late hours this morning, dropping several inches of snow in some locations.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw and Wayne counties until 10 a.m. Thursday morning. These areas could see a storm in some locations with a total of 3 to 5 inches of snow before all is said and done.

In addition, there are isolated snow showers that will continue throughout the day and will also bring gusty winds. Sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts in excess of 35 to 40 mph are expected throughout most of the day today.

This will bring windy temperatures in the single digits for most of the day today and we will keep these cold temperatures in the forecast overnight into early Friday morning. Expect only high temperatures into the low 20s on Thursday before warming into the mid 20s on Friday to end the week.

Once the lake effect snow showers and snowmachine taper off this evening, we will bring some sunshine into the end of week forecast on Friday as high pressure attempts to build across the region. But expect the cold temperatures to continue.

Looking ahead to the weekend, we will see a drastic warm-up on both Saturday and Sunday as our next system moves into the region. Expect showers to move into the region late Saturday evening and into the first half of our Sunday. High temperatures will move into the upper 30s on Saturday and warm into the lower 40s on Sunday by the end of the weekend.
