Ruben Amorim had no problem with the disagreement between Hojlund and Amad: “It’s perfect, we have to feel something.”

Ruben Amorim saw the positive in Rasmus Hojlund and Amad having a heated discussion at the end of Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League.

Hojlund scored twice as United came from behind to claim all three points, helping them finish the league phase of the competition in the top eight and secure a smooth passage to the last 16.

The first half was uneventful but United fell behind after a mix-up between goalkeeper Andre Onana and defender Matthijs de Ligt allowed Matej Vydra to score. Hojlund’s goals turned the game around, but the striker and Amad appeared at odds at Doosan Arena.

But United’s head coach viewed the incident positively. After the game, Amorim said: “For me it’s perfect. We have to feel something.

“When we have to fight against each other, it’s like a family. For me it is a very, very good sign. We have to feel something and that’s important.”

Asked whether the disagreement between Hojlund and Amad shows United’s players care, the 39-year-old said: “That’s clear. If you don’t care, you don’t do anything. When you care, you argue with your brother, with your father, with your mother. For me it is a very good sign.

“It’s a normal thing, it’s a positive thing, a healthy thing, so I’ll let the players and the captain (Bruno Fernandes) calm things down. If I think it’s too much, I go to the dressing room, but that’s where her space is. They have to talk, fight and for me this is a very important thing.

“I’m happy that we win the game and still fight against each other. This is a very good thing. When you win and you fight with your teammate because you want to score another goal, that’s a very good day for me.”

The result means Amorim has recorded three wins, one draw and two defeats in his first six games as United manager since replacing Erik ten Hag last month.

In the Europa League’s new 36-team format, the top eight advance to the round of 16 without the need for a play-off. The teams ranked ninth to 24th will have to play a home and away game to keep up with them. The bottom eight go out.

United, 13th in the Premier League, are next in action on Sunday when they travel to the Etihad for the Manchester derby against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
