LeBron James (foot) ruled out of practice, status for next game unclear

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — LeBron James was held out of Los Angeles Lakers practice Wednesday for personal reasons, coach JJ Redick said.

James sat outside The Lakers’ victory over Portland He missed his first game of the season on Sunday because of pain in his left foot. The leading scorer in NBA history also did not attend the first training session at the Lakers’ training complex during the extended break caused by the Emirates NBA Cup tournament, but Redick described it as an “excused absence.”

Los Angeles’ next game is Friday at Minnesota (8:00 p.m. ET, NBA League Pass), and Redick isn’t sure whether James or fellow starter Austin Reaves will play against the Timberwolves.

“I think both seem to be commonplace,” Redick said. “Just wait and see what it looks like (Thursday), wait and see what it looks like Friday.”

James turns 40 in less than three weeks, and Redick had previously indicated that the Lakers would use their current four-day break to give the superstar, who is currently in his record-breaking 22nd NBA season, a break treat.

James had expressed a desire to play in all 82 games earlier this season, but both he and the Lakers are now dealing with the inevitable minor injuries that occur every season.

Shortly after Thanksgiving, James experienced a slight shooting slump, but rebounded with two outstanding games during the Lakers’ road trip. He scored 29 points on 12 of 18 shots a disastrous defeat in Miamiand he scored 39 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds Atlanta’s come-from-behind victory last Friday against the Lakers.

The Lakers are 3-7 since their 10-4 start to the season, but Redick remains confident they can overcome the issues that have plagued them of late in terms of offensive consistency and defensive intensity. Redick also said he has spoken frequently with James and Anthony Davis about the Lakers’ ability to remain mentally strong even during tough times.

“Honestly, they both took responsibility,” Redick said. “They are the leaders of the team on the pitch. I had a great conversation with LeBron last week about the way he played in Miami and Atlanta, not just the stats but the way he played, the way he led. It was great.”

Reaves has missed five straight games because of a left pelvic contusion. He was able to practice on a limited basis Wednesday but is close to returning to the field, Redick said.
