Heavy snow, gusty winds and freezing air are on the way to West Michigan

News Channel 3 meteorologists have issued a weather alert for Wednesday evening through Thursday morning.

While most have been dry so far, some locations in Oceana County have already accumulated more than 6 inches of snow from Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

Our area will see some intermittent lake effect snow showers later Wednesday afternoon.

Some local areas may experience brief periods of heavier snowfall.

Major impacts are expected later this evening and overnight as an arctic front sweeps across West Michigan.

The front appears to break through from west to east between 5 and 9 p.m.

During this time, similar to last Wednesday evening, a short phase of heavy snowfall and gusty winds is expected.

It is also possible that there will be some thunderstorms again on Wednesday evening.

Lake effect snow is expected to develop behind the front and continue overnight and into Thursday morning.

As is typical with lake effect snow, some areas will have heavier bands while others will be dry.

For this reason, snowfall amounts can vary greatly over short distances.

Motorists are being warned to be prepared for rapid changes in visibility when driving from Wednesday evening to Thursday morning.

Another element to watch out for is the cold air that is likely to enter behind the front.

Temperatures will drop into the low teens overnight and possibly even single digits for some.

These temperatures, combined with wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph, will result in wind chills below 0 degrees Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.

This is the coldest air we have felt here in West Michigan since January.

It is also good to point out that salt is almost ineffective at temperatures below 15 degrees.

Even if the roads are treated, heavy icing may occur overnight and Thursday morning.
