Kuminga foul right call on Warriors-Rockets

Steve Kerr was extremely upset about a foul in the Warriors’ NBA Cup quarterfinal loss to the Rockets on Wednesday night, and the NBA upheld the official’s decision on Thursday.

Jonathan Kuminga was called for a foul during a loose ball situation near the free throw line on the Warriors’ offensive side of the court with 3.5 seconds left and Golden State leading by one point.

In a chaotic moment, Steph Curry took a 3-pointer and missed with nine seconds left on the shot clock and 12 seconds left in the game, then Gary Payton II and Fred VanVleet went down to retrieve the ball before Payton put it in Shoved towards Kuminga near the ball free throw line. Jalen Green cut in front of Kuminga to pounce on the ball, and Kuminga seemingly made normal contact with his shoulder as he went to hold on to the ball before the Rockets wing could call a timeout.

Referee Bill Kennedy called a foul on Kuminga, Green sank both free throws and Jabari Smith Jr. blocked Brandin Podziemski’s last-second 3-point attempt to catapult the Rockets into the NBA Cup semifinals this weekend in Las Vegas.

Kennedy gave a simple explanation to Houston Chronicle pool reporter Jonathan Feigen after the game: “The defender makes contact with the neck and shoulder area, which warrants a personal foul.”

The NBA’s last-two-minute report released Thursday agreed: “Kuminga (GSW) reaches over Green (HOU) to get the ball and pulls his shoulder down.”

The report identified two errors, one of which put each team at a disadvantage: Dillon Brooks should have received a three-second defensive violation with 1:41 to play, and Podziemski should have received a five-second violation before the Warriors’ final inbounds pass must be.

The report also confirmed the decision not to foul VanVleet because he made contact with Payton as they both reached for the ball.
