A man from California who was accused of lying to the FBI over false criminal allegations against President Biden and his son Hunter pleaded guilty, according to a plea agreement filed Thursday in federal court.

Alexander Smirnov was charged in February by special counsel David Weiss, who was appointed to lead the now-closed investigation into Hunter Biden. The president pardoned his son earlier this month.

Smirnov, a longtime confidential informant, told his FBI handler in 2020 that the two Bidens had each accepted $5 million from Ukrainian energy company Burisma several years earlier. According to charging documents filed against him, the allegations were “false as the defendant knew.”

The false allegations were laid out in an FBI document that became a key piece of evidence in congressional Republicans’ efforts to investigate the Biden family.

On Thursday, prosecutors from Weiss’ office wrote that Smirnow would plead guilty to one count of creating a false federal register – the FBI document that contained his false information – and three counts involving taxes. The new tax assessments were filed last month.

With Hunter Biden’s approval and pardon, Weiss’ cases and likely his time as special counsel are coming to an end. Weiss was appointed U.S. attorney during the Trump administration, and the Biden administration retained him to continue its investigation into Hunter Biden. Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed him special counsel earlier this year.

Weiss’ office declined to comment on the plea agreement, and a lawyer for Smirnov did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
