An FBI informant accused of lying about the Biden family has reached a plea deal with special counsel David Weiss, the prosecutor who led the criminal investigation into Hunter Biden.

According to a court filing Thursday in California, Alexander Smirnov is expected to plead guilty to four counts, including tax evasion and obstruction of justice by providing false information to the FBI.

Smirnov falsely told the FBI in 2020 that Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company, illegally paid off Joe Biden when he was vice president and his son Hunter, who sat on the company’s board.

This will probably end the investigation against Weiss. The special counsel led the prosecution of Hunter Biden, who was convicted of tax and firearms offenses. President Biden pardoned his son before he was scheduled to be sentenced this month.

As part of the agreement, prosecutors and defendants are asking the judge to sentence Smirnov to between four and six years in prison.

Smirnov’s admissions, part of his plea deal, make clear that a key corruption allegation between Burisma and the Bidens that fueled conservative attacks by the current president and his son was false.

“The events that the defendant first reported to the clerk in June 2020 were fabrications,” the lawsuit documents state. “The defendant turned his routine and unusual business contacts with Burisma in 2017 and later into bribery allegations against Officer 1, the presumptive nominee of one of the two major political parties for president, after he expressed his bias against Officer 1 and his candidacy. “

The plea agreement states that Smirnov repeated his false allegations about the Bidens in 2023 and told investigators a “new false narrative” about Hunter Biden by then. At this time, Weiss’ office continued to investigate Hunter Biden and brought charges against him for gun and tax crimes.

The court has not yet set a date for hearing Smirnov’s plea.

In his plea, Smirnov admits his own tax crimes.

He brought in more than $2 million between 2000 and 2022, a small portion of which he reported to the IRS, thereby avoiding paying taxes in those three years. Smirnov admits he spent more than $1 million of the money on buying a condo in Las Vegas, renting a Bentley and other luxuries for himself and his partner.

A Justice Department official declined to comment.
