A wintry mix awaits us on Friday evening and Saturday

We’ll watch our next weather system move toward Minnesota Friday evening and Saturday.

In the map below, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s high-resolution Rapid Refresh model shows the system’s snow and ice mix turning north between 6 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday.

This system will bring a wintry mix of precipitation types. Temperatures near freezing in the lowest mile of the atmosphere will result in loose snow, freezing rain and possibly sleet.

* WHAT…Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow and sleet accumulations up to an inch and ice accumulations up to a tenth of an inch.

* WHERE…Parts of northwest and west-central Iowa, southwest Minnesota, northeast Nebraska, and southeast South Dakota.

* WHEN… From 5:00 p.m. Friday to 9:00 a.m. CST Saturday.

* IMPACT…Roads and especially bridges and overpasses are likely to become slippery and dangerous. Plan for slippery road conditions. The dangerous conditions could impact Friday evening commutes.
