Which carrier delivers gifts the fastest? :: WRAL.com

With the holiday season in full swing, many of us are rushing to send gifts to our loved ones across the country. But which shipping company really delivers the fastest? 5 On Your Side put three popular carriers — UPS, FedEx and USPS — to the test to see which carrier can get three gifts to Arizona the fastest. The trip began at Deco Raleigh, a local gift shop with a wide selection of items to suit every need. 5 On Your Side selected, packaged and shipped three jars from the store.

Here is a breakdown of the costs:

  • UPS – $18.34
  • FedEx – $30.47
  • USPS – $13.09

Items were shipped on Monday December 2nd. The delivery promises were as follows:

  • UPS: Tuesday, December 10th
  • FedEx: Saturday, December 7th
  • USPS: Friday, December 6th

The result: surprising delays

When the packages finally arrived in Arizona, all items were intact but did not arrive on time.

  • FedEx arrived a day early.
  • UPS was a day behind schedule
  • USPS arrived 4 days late

Shipping deadlines for the holidays

As the holidays approach, it’s important to remember the last recommended shipping days to ensure your gifts arrive on time (economy shipping):

  • FedEx – December 13th
  • USPS – December 18th
  • UPS – Varies by location but typically arrives on December 16th

For those who wait until the last minute, you can still have your gifts delivered by Christmas Eve – but be prepared to pay an extra charge. For example, shipping via FedEx in one day on December 23rd costs more than $200.
