One person died after a small plane crashed onto a highway along the New York-Connecticut border, closing the road for an extended period, according to a police source and officials.

The plane crashed near Westchester County Airport around 7 p.m. Thursday after the pilot reported engine problems, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said. The single-engine plane crashed onto I-684 in Greenwich, Connecticut, along a short strip of highway that runs through a corner of the state just past the Westchester County line.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said the plane attempted to land at the small airport after the engine failed but failed and crashed onto the highway.

According to officials, the highway was closed between exit 2 northbound and exit 3 southbound.

According to a police source, two people were on board the plane when it crashed, one of whom died as a result of the crash.

The other was seriously injured and taken to Westchester Medical Center. The identities of the two victims were not immediately known.

The highway was closed as police investigations were underway. The FAA was also investigating the crash, and NTSB investigators were expected to arrive Friday.
