Shawn Mendes appears to address the rumored love triangle between Sabrina Carpenter and Camila Cabello

Shawn Mendes opens up about a complicated time in his love life.

In a preview clip for his upcoming interview with John Mayer on the “New Light” singer’s SiriusXM show on Thursday, December 12 How is life?Mendes, 26, referenced a past love triangle.

“I’m with someone. Two days before I’m with my ex, I say I’m going to be with her because I have unresolved feelings,” Mendes told Mayer. “Maybe it could have been two weeks instead of two days.”

Mendes added, “The greatest lesson I’ve heard is that no one gets out of this life without getting hurt, and no one gets out of this life without hurting someone.”

This narrative would be consistent with the rumors that surrounded Mendes in early 2023. At the time, it was rumored that he was dating Sabrina Carpenter, although he denied that they were in a relationship. Around the same time, he was spotted rekindling his romance with his former wife, Camila Cabello.

Although neither party involved has directly commented on the situation, many fans believe that Carpenter let her music do the talking with her hit song “Taste.”

The revenge track’s lyrics read: “I heard you’re together again and if that’s true / You’ll just have to taste me when he kisses you / If you want forever, I bet you do / I do.” Just know you will taste me too.”

Then, in September, fans speculated that Cabello, 27, made a move on Carpenter, 25, during her performance at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Festival while singing her and ex Mendes’ song “Señorita.”

“You say we’re just friends/But friends don’t know how you…” Cabello sang, deliberately pausing before singing the next word, “taste,” and instead placing a finger on her lips with a knowing look before she continued with the song.

Cabello and Mendes first split in 2021 before briefly rekindling their romance in 2023.

“You just think it doesn’t fit, it doesn’t feel right,” Cabello said Call her dad Podcast in March of their second breakup. “And I think, fortunately, I was at a point in my life where it took me less time to realize that. It took both of us less time to say, ‘This doesn’t feel right and we don’t have to try so hard to make it work.'” It’s all good.'”

She continued: “I will always care for him and love him. He’s such a good person and I’m lucky because some people have terrible exes, but he doesn’t. He’s a really nice, good person.”

Mendes echoed that sentiment, praising Cabello during a September appearance at Jay Shetty’s On purpose Podcast.

“She’s an amazing human being and she’s incredibly understanding, considerate and caring,” he said of the Fifth Harmony alum at the time. “So communicating with her isn’t difficult and that’s probably a big part of it.”

As for Carpenter, the singer continued their romance Salt burnis Barry Keoghan, although a source confirmed to PEOPLE earlier this month that the former couple had split.

“They are both young and career-focused, so they decided to take a break,” the insider said of Keoghan, 32, and Carpenter.
