“Okami” video game sequel in the works by Hideki Kamiya

A sequel to the popular game Okami is in the works at Capcom with original game director Hideki Kamiya.

The untitled game is a sequel to the 2006 action-adventure game developed by the now-defunct Clover Studio and released for PlayStation 2.

Set in a fictionalized version of classical Japan, “Okami” uses Japanese mythology and folklore to tell a story about how the land was saved from darkness by Amaterasu, the Shinto sun goddess who takes the form of a white wolf. The player takes on the role of Amaterasu and the gameplay takes place in the Celestial Brush game system from “Okami”.

The “Okami” sequel is being developed jointly by three studios, including various alums who worked on the original game: M-TWO, Machine Head Works, and Clovers, of which Kamiya is a member.

Capcom describes the game as “a new adventure in the style of ‘Okami'” and adds: “What will the new adventures of Amaterasu and Co. be like?” It will be some time before we can welcome you back, but we hope Thank you for looking forward to this project.”

The title was announced at the 2024 Game Awards on Thursday, in good company with several other big reveals, including the new Naughty Dog games franchise Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and the It Takes Two” creator Hazelight Studios. and the new teaser trailer for “Borderlands 4”.

When Game Awards host Geoff Keighley prepared to announce the sequel to Okami, he said in advance that this reveal was for a project that would be released after 2025.
