Stanley is recalling 2.6 million cups after dozens of customers complained, including burns

Stanley is recalling 2.6 million cups sold in the U.S. after the company received dozens of consumer complaints, including some users who said they suffered burns and needed medical attention.

The recall affects all Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs, double-walled mugs that are sold in a variety of colors and sizes and come with a polypropylene lid, according to the recall notice released Thursday by the Consumer Safety Product Commission. The Stanley logo, a winged bear wearing a crown, appears on the front and bottom of the mug.

The company has received 91 reports worldwide of the lids coming off during use, resulting in 38 burns. According to the CSPC, 16 of the complaints came from U.S. consumers, including two burn injuries.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled travel mugs and contact Stanley for a free replacement lid including shipping,” the CSPC said in its statement.

Stanley cups have become a pop culture phenomenon, particularly the giant Stanley Adventure Quencher, which can hold up to 40 ounces of liquid. The current recall involves smaller travel mugs whose lid threads can shrink under heat and torque, potentially causing the lid to come loose while consumers are using the mugs.

The recall comes after Stanley faced lawsuits earlier this year alleging the company failed to disclose that its cups contained lead. In a statement on its website, Stanley said that while its manufacturing process contains “some lead,” these parts are “covered with a durable stainless steel layer, making them inaccessible to consumers.”

In a statement, Stanley said it had “resolved the issue and is offering a free replacement lid that works with the existing product. At Stanley 1913 we are committed to continuous improvement and focus on developing high quality products that are built to last.”
