The southeastern corner of the state was hit hard by heavy rain and strong winds

HADDAM, CT (WFSB) – Heavy rain and strong winds across the state have begun to subside.

However, Eversource has been very busy and first responders continue to prepare for any incidents.

In Haddam, fallen trees and downed power lines were the story of Wednesday.

The emergency services in the small town had their hands full dealing with numerous incidents.

That afternoon, officials said power lines fell on a school bus on Maple Avenue West in the Higganum neighborhood.

13 students were inside and had to be evacuated. Luckily, no injuries were reported and everyone got out unharmed.

About 10 minutes further on Turkey Hill Road, a tree snapped in half and smoldered as it leaned against power lines.

Jamar Lamarre lives in Haddam and regularly walks in the area.

“I’m running up the hill all the time. I feel like this tree is bound to fall. It had to happen. I feel like it should have been cut a while ago,” he said.

Throughout the day, Eversource has been traveling across the state, including Haddam, trying to restore power to its customers following the storm.

“Crews will be working throughout the night to restore power as quickly and safely as possible,” said Tricia Modifica, a spokeswoman for Eversource.

She says all Eversource crews, as well as emergency response teams from across the state, will be available should the storm continue to worsen.

U.S. Coast Guard Police Chief William Glick says they’re also keeping an eye on Long Island Sound.

“For nights like tonight, we continue to maintain heightened awareness of local small boat stations and facilities in the area, as well as our command center,” he said.

Officials are warning people to stay indoors to avoid potential hazards on slippery roads that could lead to possible accidents.

Eversource says it’s especially important to have a plan of action if something happens, especially if you live in flood-prone areas.

They recommend keeping flashlights, non-perishable foods, water and pet food on hand.
