Ed Kelce, who was pictured with Taylor Swift in January, said he wanted to buy a gift that would touch her heart

Travis Kelce’s dad has revealed he doesn’t spend a lot of money on Taylor Swift’s birthday present, saying it’s better to spend $10 (£8) on a personal gift than try to impress her with something expensive.

The US pop star, who turned 35 on Friday, has been in a relationship with NFL player Travis since last summer.

His father Ed Kelce said: “You’re not going to destroy Taylor Swift with a gift that costs, you know, $100,000 (£80,000).”

“You have to get something that moves their heart and spend $10 on,” he continued. “Then it will be very sticky. You have to find something that triggers the emotions.”

Speaking to Baskin and Phelps’ podcast: Ed said “the amount of money is meaningless” when it came to buying for the singer and that buying a gift for her was similar to buying for his two sons. “There’s nothing they want that they don’t already have.”

Instead, he explained: “You have to look beyond that. You have to dig deeper and come up with something special.”

Taylor Swift played 152 concerts during her 21-month Eras tour

Last weekend, Swift reached the end of her Eras world tour, which spanned 152 concerts in 21 months and reportedly brought in more than $2 billion (£1.58 billion) in ticket sales.

The singer described the record tour as “the most extraordinary chapter of my life so far”.

At Sunday’s final show in Vancouver, Canada, fans began singing “Happy Birthday” to the singer.

And her birthday came a day after Swift made history as the winner of the most Billboard Music Awards.

Taylor Swift on Billboard Award: “It’s the Best Early Birthday Gift”

“This is like the best early birthday present you could have given me, so thank you very much,” Swift said in a pre-recorded acceptance speech. “I love it. It’s exactly what I wanted.”

Swift won 10 awards at Thursday’s event, including top artist and top Billboard 200 album for The Tortured Poets Department.

This brings Swift’s total number of Billboard Awards won to 49, the most of any artist, surpassing Drake’s 41.

Her other wins this year included awards for Top Female Artist, Top Hot 100 Female Artist and Top Hot 100 Songwriter. Swift said she is considering fan-voted awards because they are based on chart data.

“You are the ones who care about our albums and come to our concerts,” she said.

“For everything that happened with the Eras Tour and The Tortured Poets Department, I just have to say thank you.”

“It means a lot to me that you guys have embraced the things I’ve done and that you care so much about my music.”

The awards ceremony also saw wins for British stars Dua Lipa, Coldplay and Charli XCX – the latter winning best dance/electronic artist and best album for Brat.
