According to Dev, The Witcher 4 is the start of a new Witcher trilogy for Ciri

Last night at the Game Awards, developer CD Projekt announced The Witcher 4, a new game with Ciri as the protagonist. The game looked absolutely gorgeous in the film shown during the awards ceremony, and Ciri looked suitably menacing and powerful in her Witcher garb. In an interview published after the announcement, CD Projekt confirmed that the fourth game in the series is the start of an entirely new trilogy for Ciri.

While we were discussing the possible return of Geralt with PC Gamer – spoiler alert, he’ll be in there somewhere – game director Sebastian Kalemba said that this is the start of an entirely new trilogy for Ciri.

“(Geralt) is so important for us and for Ciri and he will definitely appear in the game,” Kalemba said. “I can’t tell you more, but I think the promise is enough. But we believe that this new journey, this new saga, this new trilogy is definitely for them.”

Executive producer Gosia Mitręga said that Ciri was the natural choice for a new trilogy and that there was “so much room for exploration” because she was still quite young and inexperienced. According to Mitręga, Ciri was always planned to be the next protagonist in the future, and the development team already planned this when developing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

“It was already in discussions,” Mitręga said. “Even when we did The Witcher: Wild Hunt, she was already a playable character there, right? So that was the natural choice. She’s also younger, there’s still a lot ahead of her – we know her story, but she’s less defined as a character because of her age, because she’s less experienced, and because she’s so passionate as a person.

No release date or window has been set for The Witcher 4, but we can probably expect it to release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
