The Philadelphia Flyers picked up a 4-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night, where Scott Laughton was the star of the show.

The Flyers’ left winger scored all four of the team’s goals, bringing his total to seven goals this season.

This was Laughton’s second career hat-trick. He played his first game in February 2021 against the Washington Capitals. This was also his first game with four goals and four points.

His career night began in the second period when, on a breakaway, Laughton received a turnover from Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson and sent the puck down the right side of the ice. As he approached Red Wings goaltender Cam Talbot, he took a slap shot and hammered the puck off the crossbar and into the goal.

Laughton’s second goal came off a shorthanded defender early in the third period, assisted by Travis Konecny. He later scored two empty-net goals less than a minute apart.

On the final goal of the night, Laughton and right winger Garnet Hathaway led a 2-on-0 breakaway en route to an empty net. Despite receiving the puck first, Hathaway made a selfless play and gave the puck back to Laughton, allowing him his fourth goal.

However, there is more to Laughton’s performance on Thursday than the glory of scoring four goals in one game.

Laughton tied the franchise record for most goals in a game, becoming the tenth Flyer to reach the milestone. The last Flyer to score four goals in a game was left winger John LeClair in October 2002.

Laughton’s appearance comes a few weeks after TSN’s Darren Dreger reported on the 30-year-old, who has drawn significant trade interest from teams across the league. According to Insider, getting the Oakville, Ontario native in a trade will require “a premium draft pick or likely a top young prospect or NHL player.”

After his four-goal performance, there shouldn’t be any dent in what the Flyers could receive if they were interested in trading their first-round pick in 2012. Laughton can also play center, brings valuable leadership skills and is in the fourth season of a five-year contract with a $3 million cap hit.

This season, Laughton has 14 points in 30 games. He reached his career high in the 2022–23 season when he scored 18 goals and 25 assists for 43 points.
