What a pathetic performance by the San Francisco 49ers. The offense was terrible and the defense couldn’t stop the Los Angeles Rams in the final quarter, although they played well for three quarters as the 49ers lost 12-6. The loss didn’t mathematically eliminate the 49ers from the postseason roster, but it essentially did.

That was hard to watch. I hate the Rams and despise losing to them. Yes, I cover the 49ers and am supposed to do these things professionally. But first and foremost, I’m a fan. That’s why my quick reactions this week are full of anger. This may not be the most encouraging read, but these are my live reactions as the action unfolds. Let’s take a look:

  • A three-and-out is not the way the 49ers offense should start. Only one running play was called – on a night you absolutely have to run the ball.
  • Dre Greenlaw wasted no time getting started.
  • The defense responded with a three-pointer of its own. Deommodore Lenoir let a potential interception slip through his hands. That would have been a big deal.
  • Deebo Samuel now attacks his teammates. I’m not sure what it was, but he just tackled Isaac Guerendo on a run up the middle.
  • Good job by Jake Moody with the 53-yard field goal.
  • Two defensive stops. Two dropped interceptions. This time it was Talanoa Hufanga who dropped one. On the one hand, in his defense he has a bat.
  • It’s good that the defense came into play, because the offense has been weak so far.
  • That was a great special teams play by Nick McCloud, who put the punt down at the three-yard line. And an excellent punt from Pat O’Donnell.
  • How do you let Matthew Stafford run for a first down? He is old and slow.
  • You know the weather is bad when Jauan Jennings drops passes.
  • Jake Brendel stinks. I may have mentioned this before – like almost every week.
  • That was a miserable first half. The defense was good, but the offense was terrible.
  • Greenlaw had nine tackles in the first half. He’s a special player and a big reason the defense will struggle in 2024.
  • The kick coverage was better tonight, but why can’t Moody get it to the end zone?
  • Accuracy isn’t there for Brock Purdy tonight. He brought down boys and he brought down boys.
  • Samuel deserves to be booed. What a terrible fall from grace on what could have been a touchdown.
  • I lost count of how many times the 49ers defenders had a hand on the ball. But there hasn’t been a single interception yet.
  • The secondary was excellent, but the pass rush was not. They barely touched Stafford.
  • The Rams made some adjustments on offense in the second half, and Nick Sorensen hasn’t responded well so far.
  • Purdy has tipped more passes than anyone I can remember – especially this season.
  • Every time they throw the ball to Samuel, nothing good happens. So maybe stop throwing him the ball.
  • Fred Warner is a machine. What would the 49ers be without him?
  • It stopped raining a few minutes ago, but no one informed the 49ers offense. You still can’t do anything.
  • Ricky Pearsall with the catch! This is a good time to think of a play.
  • Isaac Guerendo played well tonight despite not having much room to play.
  • A bad pass from Purdy simply ruined the game. And it looked like he had an open receiver underneath. There was no reason to throw that deep pass. That interception just cost the 49ers their season.
  • The first turnover of the game is crucial. How many interceptions did the 49ers drop tonight?
  • The 49ers offense managed just six points against a poor Rams defense. Purdy was bad. Samuel was bad. And the offensive line may have been even worse. How do you lose a game when you haven’t given up a touchdown?
  • DeVondre Campbell is a loser. When Greenlaw went down, he left his team and refused to play. Kyle Shanahan said Campbell went to the locker room. I don’t like players leaving their team. Can you say it?

Next up for the 49ers is a trip to Miami to take on the Dolphins. This team will not give up. They’ll show up and play hard even when there’s nothing left to play with. These guys are nothing like Campbell and they will be motivated to prove it.
