Austin Armstrong is “working toward” a deal with Houston, per report

Austin Armstrong will be leaving Florida for another opportunity, according to a report.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel broke the news Friday morning, pointing out that Armstrong is working toward a deal to become Houston’s next defensive coordinator.

Armstrong was Florida’s defensive coordinator the past two seasons. Before joining the Gators, he was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Southern Miss. Armstrong is certainly a younger player compared to many of his contemporaries – his first on-field coaching role came in 2020 when he was named linebackers coach in Louisiana.

After the 2023 season, Billy Napier brought in Ron Roberts, a more experienced coach, to be Florida’s co-defensive coordinator. Florida’s defense improved from 13th in the SEC in 2023 to 9th in 2024 in yards per play allowed.

If Armstrong moves to Houston, he will join a program that is in its second tier under Willie Fritz. The Cougars are coming off four to eight consecutive seasons entering their time in the Big 12, so Armstrong will have a lot of work ahead of him if they want to reach the previous heights reached by Kevin Sumlin and Tom Herman.
