Alabama A&M says the football player is in stable condition, hours after his death was announced

Alabama A&M has retracted its announcement about the death of football player Medrick Burnett Jr., saying the redshirt freshman was in stable condition.

Burnett, a linebacker, suffered a head injury in an October game against Alabama State. He has been hospitalized at UAB Hospital since then.

The school’s athletic department said it was informed of Burnett’s reported death Tuesday evening by “an immediate family member” and “acted in accordance with the family member’s wishes” to inform the public.

On Wednesday, the department said it had heard from a hospital representative and learned that Burnett was still alive.

“We express our immediate regret for spreading false information, but are very pleased that Medrick remains in stable condition,” the school said.

According to the school’s athletics website, Burnett, a native of Lakewood, California, began his football career at Grambling State University in Louisiana before transferring to Alabama A&M. He played in seven games and made five tackles, including three against Austin Peay.

A GoFundMe for Burnett had raised over $40,000 as of Thursday morning.

“Please pray that it is difficult for him, but we will hold on until the end. May God give us strength so that we can keep the faith,” says GoFundMe.
