Cody Bellinger is still a boy… What’s going on?

The behind-the-scenes conversation surrounding Cody Bellinger has reached such a fever pitch that I’m a little surprised it hasn’t happened yet, especially now that Kyle Tucker is a Cub. The overlapping positions, the financial crisis and the general direction of the rumors make this almost inevitable. So why hasn’t it happened yet?

One theory (via Brett) was that the Cubs were simply waiting to make sure the Tucker trade went smoothly (and that means medical supplies). Because if it falls through for some reason, they could reconsider the deal with Bellinger. I think that’s probably a fact, but there may be more to it.

What’s wrong with Cody Bellinger?

According to the New York Post, the Cubs and Yankees continue to be apart financially, which has been a running theme with every Cody Bellinger trade.

Trade talks with the Cubs involving Cody Bellinger are underway and he could be their move, sources told The Post, especially after Kyle Tucker was flown by the board to Chicago in a blockbuster trade Friday… In a possible one Bellinger deal the Yankees “Would you like the Cubs to pick up a portion of the remaining two years and $52.5 million on Bellinger’s contract?” which is a $25 million exit for 2026 includes??? and they are believed to have an agreement worth more than $10 million.

Ah, there it is. The Cubs and Yankees are reportedly “more than $10 million” apart on an agreement. A hurdle that can be overcome? Yes, of course. But a roadblock? No doubt.

But I still believe that will happen. For one thing, we all know that the Yankees love Cody Bellinger and that he’s such a perfect fit for the team – both because he’s left-handed (which is ideal in New York) and because he can play all over the outfield as well as first base Emergency positions for the Yankees.

Additionally, the Yankees only upset Kyle Tucker after upsetting Juan Soto. They need an addition, they need a name. And Bellinger can be that guy.

But whatever influence they lost when they acquired Tucker, the Cubs also lost when they acquired Tucker. We knowledge The Cubs want to forego Bellinger’s salary and currently have no obvious place to play him. So the bottom line? I still believe this will happen, and I think it will happen soon. At this point, reporting is about money.
