Victory Friday Cleanup and more

The Los Angeles Rams (8:6) emerged victorious in one of the lowest-scoring games of the NFL season with a 12:6 road win over their bitter division rivals the San Francisco 49ers (6:8) on Thursday Night Football. There is still a lot to be said about a game in which neither team scored touchdowns.

In this episode of the Los Angeles Rams Insider Podcast, Rams on SI beat writer Tom Cavanaugh offers his final thoughts on the Rams’ division win over the 49ers and discusses a mid-game situation that caused turmoil in the 49ers’ locker room :

The Rams had a completely opposite performance compared to last Sunday’s shootout win over the Buffallo Bills. Instead of scoring more than 40 points while conceding almost the same number, they were on pace to make four field goals this week while their defense silenced the 49ers with just six total points.

To get the job done, the offense relied heavily on the third-year running back Kyren Williams who were the lifeline of this team outside of the star receiver Puka Nacua. Williams stormed to his third 100+ game of the season and made sure to extend crucial drives with first downs late in the game.

Nacua had nearly his fifth game of the season with 100 or more receiving yards and was the quarterback’s main target all night Matthew Stafford. These two were a big reason why the Rams were able to shoot four field goals in a game that completely lacked any offensive rhythm.

Rookie kicker Joshua Karty was the key factor in winning this game. After missing two of his last three field goals, Karty stepped up and made a perfect 4-4 with a 48-yard field goal to get the scoring started and tie the game at the end of the first half. His development as a young professional continues.

Midway through the third quarter, 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw was struck and had to play a few snaps, which resulted in backup linebacker De’Vondre Campbell having to step in. Campbell refused to enter the field and eventually left the field shortly afterward.

If the loss and loss of their playoff chances wasn’t enough for the 49ers, one of their players wasn’t willing to step in and play for his teammates when they needed him most. These teammates were upset after the game and extremely dissatisfied with Campbell’s refusal to participate in the game.

49ers tight end George Kittle was asked about the situation and gave a very blunt answer.

“I’ve never been around anyone who’s ever done that,” Kittle said. “And I hope I’m never around anyone who does that again.”

49ers starting defensive back Charvarius Ward faced the same scenario and gave an even more pointed response that shows what’s going on in the 49ers’ locker room as their hellish season continues to unfold.

“That’s nonsense to me. It will probably be canceled soon,” Ward said after the game.
