The popular talk show host and comedian suffers a heartbreaking loss

Talk show host and comedian Conan O’Brien recently suffered a tragic, back-to-back loss as both of his parents died just days after each other.

Thomas O’Brien, 95, died on December 9th, while Ruth Reardon O’Brien, 92, died on December 12th. Both died at their home in Brookline, Massachusetts, Us Weekly reported.

The couple has been married for 66 years and has six children, People said.

Known for his work in antimicrobial drug resistance research, Thomas O’Brien was the first director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, according to People.

“Science has said there is no perpetual motion machine, but my father proved that wrong,” Conan, 61, told the Boston Globe in an interview published Thursday. “My father was constantly on the move. And he was interested in everything – absolutely everything.”

O’Brien credited his father with introducing him to classic comedians like the Marx Brothers.

“(My father) was often the funniest guy in the room,” he told the Globe. “And when he laughed, his whole body twitched and he almost hugged himself.”

Ruth Reardon O’Brien was an attorney at the Boston law firm Ropes & Gray. She was the second woman to be made a partner at the firm.

A funeral will take place for both on December 18th.

Conan O’Brien is scheduled to host the 97th Academy Awards on March 2nd. It is the comedian’s first time hosting the event.
