Former UGA football player from South Georgia dies after car accident in Florida

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – A former University of Georgia football player and south Georgia native died Friday after being involved in a car accident in Florida.

Gleaton Jones, a 2021 running back for the UGA football team, died on Friday, according to his statement Obituary from Mathews Funeral Home in Albany.

Jones, a native of Albany, was involved in a car accident on St. George Island, WALB, our sister station in Albany, reported.

Jones had been in critical condition since the Dec. 10 crash Red and Black, the independent student news organization at UGA, reported. The Red and Black also reported that Jones suffered a serious brain injury as a result of the accident and had to undergo surgery.

Barstool UGA, a subsidiary of Barstool Sports, used X, formerly Twitter, to post about Jones’ death.

Jones attended UGA after graduating from high school at Deerfield-Windsor School in Albany. There he received All-State, All-Region and All-Albany honors.

Jones’ funeral service will be held on Monday, December 16, at Wynfield Plantation in Albany.

Albany is over two hours southwest of Atlanta.
