Witness recounts how the Amber Alert incident began with a little girl from Little Rock

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas – After a 15-hour search, an 11-month-old Little Rock daughter is back with her mother, but the person accused of taking her is still on the run.

Arkansas State Police issued an Amber Alert Friday afternoon after reporting that the young girl had been chased away from a crime scene outside the Broadway Food Mart.

Joe Burks said he saw the original incident.

“He jumped in there, burned rubber and threw the woman into the air,” Burks said of the suspect.

The scary scene occurred when an argument turned into a fight. When Burks said he saw a man beating a woman, he knew he had to intervene.

Little Rock and Arkansas State Police said 22-year-old Grover Key III was fighting with the mother of a young child when he stole her vehicle and drove away, attempting to run over the lady and hitting another person. Burks saw it and said the spectator who entered the store was blown up.

“I felt her head and noticed she had a big lump there,” he said.

What he didn’t see about the driver and the car was perhaps the most important detail.

“I heard her say, ‘My baby is in there.’ He took my baby,” Burks recalled.

Authorities later found the vehicle, but Key and an 11-month-old girl, who the family says is Key’s daughter, were nowhere to be found.

As of 1 p.m. Friday, Little Rock police announced she was safe and sound as arrangements had been made for the infant to be returned by a family member.

However, Grover Key was still at large. He is 1.70 m tall, weighs 75 kg and has black dreads.

“Hurry up and catch him. I really hope they do and I hope the woman is OK,” Burks said.
