LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – The first winter weather advisory of the season begins tomorrow afternoon in the capital, not for measurable snow (which we’re still waiting for), but for freezing drizzle and rain. This will likely impact travel in central and eastern Nebraska.

Let’s start with the consultation. It starts in the afternoon hours and lasts until Saturday morning. The first half of the day is likely to be dry, but heavy rainfall is likely to occur in the early to mid afternoon hours. This will continue for most of the evening, but parts of southeastern Nebraska will experience rain.

Regardless, up to 0.20 inches of ice is possible for much of the state (with the highest totals north of I-80 and along and west of I-29). That may not sound like much, but it doesn’t take much to create difficult driving conditions. Be particularly careful during your evening commute. Small snow accumulations are also possible during this time.

What is an important reason for icing? Our high temperatures. In many areas, temperatures are near freezing, and a difference of one or two degrees can make all the difference in the type of precipitation. Expect to be in your upper 20s to mid 30s.

After this series of mixed precipitation fails to occur on Saturday, we will see a warming trend. By Sunday, highs will climb back into the upper 40s and lower 50s. A few small rainfalls are still possible for the coming week, but it should remain mostly calm.
