Look at the sky! Meteor Shower Visible Friday Night – NBC10 Philadelphia

Look at the sky! A meteor shower will be seen across our entire region tonight.

The Geminid meteor shower is expected to peak around 9pm on Friday, December 13th and last until at least 2am on Saturday, December 14th.

Tips to see the meteors

Meteors will be visible in the southern sky earlier in the evening and then hover directly overhead as the night progresses.

Tonight the moon will be 50% illuminated and will play a role in how well we can see the meteors.

Normally we can see up to 100 meteors per hour during this shower, but the moon could reduce the number we can see this time.

For the best view, look at the area of the sky farthest from the Moon’s position.

Best speeds are expected to occur around 2 a.m., but meteors will be visible throughout the night.

Dress warmly if you go outside to watch the meteors

Don’t forget to dress warmly this evening as temperatures will drop into the 20s and winds will get into the teens.

We are very fortunate to have clear skies all night to view this meteor shower.

The meteors come from the asteroid 3200 Phaethon, discovered in 1983, and correspond to the orbit of the Geminids.

This shower is considered one of the best and most reliable meteor showers every year.
