Sydney Sweeney defends herself against body critics with training footage for boxing biopic

Sydney Sweeney claps back at her body shamers.

On Friday, December 13th, the euphoria The 27-year-old actress posted a video on Instagram that included dozens of screenshots of comments about her body.

“She’s pretty old-fashioned, isn’t she,” one comment said. “There’s nothing to see here other than your average stocky Yankee girl,” read another. Many of the comments appear to come from a Daily Mail Article that showed photos of Sweeney soaking up the sun in a bikini at her home in the Florida Keys.

The montage of comments is then edited to footage of it Everyone but you Star is working out as she trains intensively for her role as Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic about the boxer.

Her fitness shots include shots of her flipping giant tires, lifting weights, boxing, and flexing her muscular biceps.

“Well the cat is out of the bag thanks to some treats in the bushes, so here’s a little BTS from my movie I’m working on,” Sweeney wrote in an October 16 Instagram post. “Over the past few months, I have been training intensively to bring to life the story of an incredible woman – a true champion who fought both inside and outside the ring.”

“Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength and hope, and I am honored to follow in her footsteps and share her powerful story with all of you,” said the Emmy-nominated actress – who “wrestled from 12 to 19 years old did and did kickboxing. “Years old,” according to Deadline – continued.

Christy Martin, 56, rose to fame in the 1990s and became one of America’s most successful boxers. She became the first woman inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame in 2016 and also the first woman inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020. She was the first female boxer to grace the cover Sports Illustrated in 1996, Ronda Rousey became the second and youngest in 2015.

Martin, who retired from professional boxing in 2012, survived a murder attempt in 2010 when her husband, James V. Martin, stabbed her multiple times and left her for dead. He was later sentenced to 25 years in prison. In 2017, she married one of her former boxing rivals, Lisa Holewyne.

On November 25, Sweeney announced that she had “finished filming on Christy Martin’s story,” which is currently untitled. “It was one of the most emotional and transformative experiences of my life. Christy’s journey is so deeply inspiring and having her by my side throughout this process has been nothing short of surreal.”

“There were moments on set where I looked over at her standing at the monitors cheering us on and I just got so emotional,” she continued. “Knowing what she went through, what she went through to be there in that moment — that made me cry.”

“This story is so much bigger than just a movie. She is a testament to resilience, survival and the strength to keep fighting,” the Instagram caption reads.

Directed by David Michôd, the film stars Sweeney, Ben Foster (who will portray Martin’s husband James), Merritt Weaver, Ethan Embry and Katy O’Brien.
