Patrick Gibson also sees the similarity between him and Michael C. Hall.

The 29 year old Dexter: Original Sin star spoke to PEOPLE at the show’s premiere in New York City on Thursday, December 11, about following in Hall’s footsteps and the striking resemblance between him and the original Dexter Morgan.

“It definitely helps to get a role where you’re playing the same guy,” Gibson admitted.

Gibson stars in the prequel series, which follows the life of a forensic blood spatter technician who becomes a secret vigilante serial killer.

“When his bloodthirsty urges can no longer be ignored, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness,” the synopsis reads. “Under the tutelage of his father Harry, he adopts a code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be excluded from society, without becoming a target of law enforcement. This is particularly challenging for young Dexter as he begins a forensic internship with the Miami Metro Police Department.”

Gibson told PEOPLE that while audiences “know Dexter as this skilled, sophisticated, accomplished serial killer, the Dexter we made.” original sin has not yet perfected the art of killing.”

“He also hasn’t fully perfected his personality yet, which is a slightly more conscious endeavor for a serial killer than for a normal person,” he said. “We’re going to see a version of Dexter that’s much rougher around the edges.”

The actor also touched on the portrayal of the complex character, whose fate has already been described and revealed.

“I think it’s been equal parts challenge and blessing,” he said. “For me it was really useful to know where (Dexter) is going to end up because then you can appreciate who he is at that moment and where he’s going.”

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Patrick Dempsey will also make special guest appearances as CSI boss Tanya Martin and Metro Homicide Detective Aaron Spencer, respectively.
