Atmospheric river brings heavy rain and strong winds – NBC Bay Area

More rain is on its way to the Bay Area in the form of an atmospheric river that will bring heavy rain and strong winds Friday evening through Saturday.

The strong storm has prompted a number of weather warnings for various parts of the Bay Area, including a flood warning, a coastal flood warning, a high wind warning, a high wind warning and a high wind warning, according to the National Weather Service Surf. Meteorologist Vianey Arana’s microclimate forecast is tracking an approaching storm that could affect some weekend plans.

Rain timeline

The atmospheric river system is expected to arrive Friday through Saturday, bringing up to 3 inches of rain and wind gusts of up to 40-50 mph at higher elevations and along the coast, weather officials said.

According to the weather service, the rain is expected to ease on Sunday, but wet weather is expected again on Monday.

Flood watch

A flood warning was issued for the interior valleys of North Bay from Friday afternoon into Sunday afternoon. The weather service says excessive runoff may cause flooding of rivers, streams, creeks and other low-lying and flood-prone locations, including in urban areas.

Coastal flood warning

The National Weather Service issued a coastal flood warning that went into effect Thursday morning and will remain in effect until 1 p.m. Monday in San Francisco and San Pablo Bays.

Here is a breakdown of the NWS recommendation:

  • Tidal levels are rising due to higher astronomical tides.
  • Low-lying areas in the San Francisco Bay Area may experience minor flooding during high tide.
  • The highest tide in San Francisco is expected to be 6.74 feet at 8:12 a.m. Thursday, 6.98 feet at 8:54 a.m. on Friday, 7.07 feet at 9:37 a.m. on Saturday, and 10:22 a.m. on Sunday 7.02 feet and 6.82 feet at 11 a.m.: 8 a.m. Monday.

Strong wind warning

A strong wind warning was issued for San Francisco and the Peninsula coast from 10 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday. The weather service said southerly winds gusting to 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 50 mph are expected, which could lead to downed trees and power lines and widespread power outages.

Wind warning

A wind advisory has been issued for the entire Bay Area, starting at different times Friday depending on the region and continuing through Saturday morning.

High surf notice

A high surf warning has been issued for San Francisco and the Peninsula coast from 10 p.m. Friday through 7 p.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

“This is just the beginning of dangerous conditions expected over the next week,” the Bay Area office of the National Weather Service said on social media. “Please use extreme caution while on the water and on the beach.”
