WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) – As expected, Saturday morning weather makes travel difficult in many parts of Iowa.

The Iowa Department of Transportation reports that highways throughout Iowa are 100 percent ice covered except for the extreme northeast, east and southwest.

Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution while traveling on highways across the state.

Despite the road conditions, local law enforcement has reported very few accidents.

At 7:40 a.m., the DOT 511 website showed a crash slowing traffic on I-380 in Evansdale. It occurred in the southbound lanes between the Evansdale Drive and River Forest Road interchanges. Department of Transportation officials said the left shoulder was blocked due to the accident, causing a slight delay for interstate traffic.

An hour later the area was cleared.

Further south in Cedar Rapids, police reported some weather-related traffic problems. As of 7 a.m. Saturday, there was one reported vehicle accident with no injuries.

Authorities expected that number to change as morning traffic increased.

In Iowa City, public transportation was delayed two hours due to road conditions caused by the ice storm.

City officials said transit buses would begin operating at 9 a.m. Transit staff will monitor road conditions and adjust operations if necessary.
