3 inmates escape Hale Nani rehabilitation facility in Pana’ewa: Big Island Now

Hawaii police are searching for three inmates who escaped Friday afternoon from Hale Nani, a residential-style facility that houses the Hawai’i Community Correctional Center’s reintegration program in Pana’ewa:

  • Joseph C. Fernandez is 35 years old, 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 195 pounds.
  • Kawai Pomroy is 41 years old, 6 feet tall and weighs 260 pounds.
  • Clyde Loa is 31 years old, 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 225 pounds.

The three occupants allegedly escaped from Hale Nani around 4:30 p.m. by taking a metallic dark gray 2014 Nissan Altima with Hawaiian license plate ZCK261 that belonged to a civilian employee.

Pomroy was first discovered missing. When staff discovered that inmates Clyde T. Loa, 31, and Joseph C. Fernandez, 35, were also missing, an emergency lockdown was implemented.

Around the same time, an employee discovered his car keys and vehicle were missing, and employees immediately called the Hawaii Police Department and the Sheriff’s Department.

The police are currently investigating how the occupants got the vehicle keys and fled.

The police remain on site. This is an active and ongoing investigation.

Loa was in custody on multiple counts of carjacking and resisting an order to stop a motor vehicle.

Pomroy was incarcerated for abuse of a household or family member.

Fernandez was in custody for parole revocation for a firearms violation.
