Bay Area Storm: Coastal areas and North Bay prepare for strong winds and rain

PACIFICA, Calif. (KGO) — After severe weather a few weeks ago, this weekend’s storm is expected to be the first to hit the Bay Area since before Thanksgiving.

On Friday, PG&E officials say they spent the day preparing.

“We currently have our emergency call center open. We staff them 24/7 to ensure we are aware of any outages or emergencies and can deploy responders at a moment’s notice,” said PG&E spokesperson Tamar Sarkissian.

According to Sarkissian, while we expect measurable precipitation, it is the strong winds of the approaching storm that could cause power outages.

SCHEDULE: Stronger storm hits the Bay Area on Saturday

“The wind can break branches, send debris flying and damage our equipment. Otherwise, healthy trees can be uprooted,” she said.

At the local fire station in Pacifica, Fire Inspector Clyde Preston tells us that the department is urging people to prepare for the storm now – from charging electronic devices to making sure things like flashlights are ready to use.

But Preston says it’s not just about preparing the inside. The fire inspector takes the time to show us examples of areas like gutters and drainpipes that he thinks people should all clean before the storm hits.

“What we don’t want is we don’t want people standing on a ladder trying to clean gutters during a storm,” Preston said.

However, the expected stormy weather does not deter everyone.

We spoke to several surfers at Pacifica Beach and they all told us it was good for the waves.

This includes Thomas Corcoran and his friends. The group tells us that they are new to the sport, but that the choppy waves are a great way to learn quickly.

“You get caught all the time. Quite often you get hit by waves, come to shore and then swim back,” Corcoran said.

In the North Bay, homeowners and first responders are preparing for the storm, which could bring strong winds and heavy rain. Many are still busy cleaning up after the last storm, which brought flooding.

Olia Pospelova showed us all the cleaning and disinfection work that was carried out at the Surrey Resort in Guerneville. A storm before Thanksgiving flooded the site with several feet of water. Now a new storm is approaching.

“We are ready now. We have made all the preparations just in case,” Pospelova said.

Many items are being stored or moved outside with all eyes on the Russian River.

“So we’re hoping there won’t be any flooding or flooding inside. We are ready. It won’t be a surprise like last time,” she said.

Angela Roman lives on Old River Road. Her family is prepared for the storm with a new propane tank for cooking in case the power goes out.

“Everything is flooded, so I’m worried that trees could fall on our house and the river could rise. That’s what we’re worried about,” Roman said.

“We are expecting significant rainfall across the region,” said Sonoma County Fire Department Chief Cyndi Foreman.

Foreman said flooding from local streams is possible, as is the flooding that parts of the county experienced in the November storm, which flooded many cars and parking lots.

“And the rain really has nowhere to go. It doesn’t penetrate the ground. We’re going to see more runoff and landslides, so much water running off the hills,” Foreman said.

Strong winds could knock down trees and the coast, rough seas. Last month, eight people died in three separate boating accidents in Bodega Bay.
