The unidentified flying objects have been featured in local news reports and on social media since late November.

However, attention has increased this week as lawmakers demanded explanations from U.S. federal and state authorities about the causes of the sightings.

Mr. Kim said an officer pointed out the lights at Round Valley Reservoir in Hunterdon County.

He wrote on X that the lights were sometimes “solid white” while others were “flashing red and green.”

Mr Kim also said that some of the unidentified objects appeared to move in “small groups of 2 to 4”, but they often saw “5 to 7 lights” at the same time.

“We clearly saw several that moved horizontally and then immediately switched back to the opposite direction, in maneuvers that aircraft cannot do,” he added.

The senator added that he and law enforcement officers used a flight tracking app to check whether what they could see were aircraft.

He added that the lights were “dim and not associated with any aircraft that we could see in the tracker app.”

Police told Mr Kim that they had used helicopters to try to get closer to the objects, but said: “The drones would turn off the lights and go dark as they approached.”

Earlier Thursday, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a joint statement saying they had “no evidence” that the drone sightings “pose a threat to, or are related to, national or public safety.” have abroad”.

They said they were working closely with the New Jersey State Police to determine “whether the reported drone flights are actually drones or whether they are instead manned aircraft or otherwise inaccurate sightings.”

In a separate post to the videos he shared, Mr. Kim wrote “We are much more concerned about our capabilities in general when it comes to drone detection and countermeasures.”

The Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Office urged people on Dec. 6 to report any sightings to the FBI.

Similar sightings have been reported in New York City. Mayor Eric Adams said the city is investigating and working with New Jersey and federal officials.

Now President-elect Donald Trump has posted that he believes the US government knows more than it is saying.

On his website Truth Social, he wrote: “Let the public know, now. Otherwise, shoot them!!!”

Theories circulating about the sightings include that they were caused by drones from an Iranian mothership.

Others think they are from the Secret Service, which keeps Mr. Trump’s Bedminster estate safe.
