Alaskanke is missing in Hawaii after strong rip currents were reported off Kaua’i Beach

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The search continued Friday for an Anchorage woman who authorities believe was dragged into the water off a beach on the north shore of the Hawaiian island of Kaua’i earlier this week.

Kaua’i County Fire Department officials said in a news release Friday morning that 32-year-old Lauren Cameron was last seen Wednesday afternoon near Hanakāpī’ai Beach, located on the Nā Pali Coast, an area , which attracts many visitors due to its steep, lush coastline.

Cameron reportedly entered the water from the beach and was “swept out to sea by strong currents,” according to the Kaua’i Fire Department.

Cameron is currently employed by the Anchorage Health Department, a spokesperson confirmed to Alaska’s News Source on Friday. Cameron is one of two caregivers in the Women, Infants and Children program, known as WIC.

Leslie Andrews, a former colleague who worked under Cameron, called her a model supervisor who is passionate about helping local families in an interview with Alaska’s News Source on Friday.

“What can I do to improve this? That was (their) standard,” Andrews said. “What can I do to improve this?”

Michelle Fehribach, a public information officer for the Anchorage Department of Health, responded to a request for information from Alaska’s News Source on Friday.

“We are all devastated by the news of the ongoing search for her and are keeping her and her loved ones in our thoughts,” Fehribach said.

Officers from the Kaua’i Police Department, Kaua’i Fire Department, Ocean Safety Bureau, Department of Land and Natural Resources and the on-duty KFD battalion chief are involved in the search.
