College football is characterized by rivalries and pageantry, with the annual matchups between longtime opponents being some of the biggest events on the sports calendar.

The annual Army-Navy game is Saturday, with the Black Knights and Midshipmen facing off at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, home of the NFL’s Washington Commanders.

While the duel generates great interest at the national level every year, this year’s meeting looks set to be particularly exciting.

Under coach Jeff Monken and behind star quarterback Bryson Daily, Army is 11-1 and ranked No. 18 in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll. The 11 wins are the Black Knights’ most wins in a season, which is no small feat for a program that has won three national championships. Last Friday, they earned their biggest win of the season when they defeated Tulane 35-14 in the American Athletic Conference championship game.

The Midshipmen, meanwhile, enter the game with an 8-3 record, a significant improvement after finishing 5-7 in coach Brian Newberry’s first season. However, after a 6-0 start, Navy has lost three of its last five games.

If nothing else, the game should provide some excitement. Of the 10 past Army-Navy games, eight have been decided by a score, including Army’s 17-11 victory last season in Foxborough, Massachusetts. After Navy’s 14-game winning streak in the series was snapped in 2016, the Black Knights have won six of the last eight meetings.
