Power outage, trees down after SF tornado warning

San Francisco residents were suddenly awakened in the early morning hours by a tornado warning from the National Weather Service.

The alarm came at 5:52 a.m. as strong winds blew and heavy rain fell. According to the San Francisco Fire Department, 49 calls were made between 6 a.m. and 7:40 a.m. No one was injured, a department spokesman said, but the storm left homes with trees and wires, broken windows, minor flooding and roof damage.

The warning was lifted at 6:15 a.m

More than 11,000 residents lost power last night and early this morning, according to Jackie Thornhill, a spokeswoman for the Department of Emergency Management. PG&E crews have been repairing lines since 7:30 a.m. “It seems to be steadily improving,” Thornhill said.

According to the PG&E outage map, power was still out around 9:30 a.m. in the southeast corner of Mission, Bernal Heights, Holly Park — and the Outer Sunset.

In the Mission, the storm uprooted a huge tree at Shotwell Street and 24th Street and fell directly over 24th Street. This morning workers were already out clearing the road.

“I could hear chainsaws working,” said Ricardo Peña, who owns Mixcoatl on 24th Street.

The tree was on the corner of Shotwell and 24th Streets in front of George’s Market, which doesn’t open until 10 a.m. The Taqueria Guadalajara directly opposite doesn’t open until 11 a.m. Traffic is blocked for the time being.

Further south, Bernal Heights resident Christian Brede woke up to large pieces of trees falling on a car parked in front of his home. “We heard the tree, something happened outside. There was a flash,” he said.

The fire department arrived within minutes and began cutting the branches off the tree with a chainsaw.
