Tigers add Portal running back

Auburn has added another member to the backfield through the transfer portal.

This time it’s a big-bodied running back.

Former UConn RB Durell Robinson has signed with Auburn, he announced on social media Saturday. He is the second signing of the day for Auburn after the Tigers signed quarterback Jackson Arnold earlier in the morning.

“My running back coach, Coach (Derrick Nix), he’s my size back,” Robinson said of the reason for Auburn. “Not many running back coaches can relate to me because I’m used to my back being bigger than my ability, and I’ve seen Coach D-Nix play. I’ve heard everything about him. He does exactly what I did.”

Robinson, 6-foot-10 and 195 pounds, fits the running back build Auburn was looking for in the transfer portal. After high school, he signed with Charlotte before transferring to UConn for this season. As a redshirt freshman with the Huskies, he recorded 731 yards rushing and eight touchdowns.

Given the talent Auburn is bringing back next year, Robinson felt it was the best fit for him.

“I did research on all of this,” Robinson said. “It’s a lot of things that Auburn has, and it’s not like Auburn is slouching. I understand it was 5-7, but those seven losses weren’t a real seven losses. They were determined by just a few plays. “So everyone here wants to win and they want the same thing I want, so I’m definitely looking forward to that.”

Running backs coach Nix’s resume also helped in his decision.

“Everything I want to do, he’s already accomplished,” Robinson said. “Since he coaches other positions like receivers and tight ends, he can help me improve other aspects of my game like my hands, my route running, getting in and out of breaks when running routes out of the backfield, and So does the offensive coordinator, so that plays a role.”

He has three seasons of eligibility remaining.
