NFL Thanksgiving Day 2024 Early Game Opening Thread

It’s Thanksgiving Day, and if you’re reading this, that means you’re ready for Turkey Day football! The Buffalo Bills aren’t playing this afternoon, but two afternoon games should keep the Buffalo Rumblers busy, even if the matchups aren’t great on paper.

Of course, there are some underlying interests to watch for in Bills Mafia’s first two games this afternoon.

The classic NFC North showdown begins at 12:30 p.m. EST as the Detroit Lions welcome the Chicago Bears to Ford Field. The 10-1 Lions are roaring while the 4-7 Bears, led by rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, are trying to gain relevance. Bills fans will remember Williams’ first NFL action during the summer preseason action, when he and Chicago prevailed against a very unconventional Buffalo defense.

Detroit is an easy team to root for, and the same goes for Buffalo’s fan base today. A Lions win improves the strength of the Bills’ game plan, which is of course one of the deciding factors in the event of such a scenario at the end of the season.

Then, at 4:30 p.m. EST, it’s the New York Giants vs. the Dallas Cowboys in a game that has garnered a lot of attention for all the wrong reasons. Instead of a quarterback duel between Dak Prescott and Daniel Jones, the USA’s spotlight is on Cooper Rush and Drew Lock. For the Giants, it was supposed to be Danny DiVito, but he was injured in Week 12 after taking the reins from a demoted and released Jones.

There are only seven wins total between the two NFC East teams, so today is mostly about pride and future contracts for certain players. Yes, there’s a big reason why Bills fans should cheer on Dallas this afternoon – between naps, of course. The reason for this comes down to Strength of Victory (SOV) and what the Giants’ loss does to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ SOV. (The Giants lost to Pittsburgh earlier this season.)

Here’s your open thread for the first two of three NFL games on Thanksgiving Day. There will be a separate game thread for the Miami Dolphins at Green Bay Packers in prime time. As always, be kind to one another and in all things… Go Bills!
